Urban Engineering Studio Blackberry Hill

Masterplan for a mixed-use development

Blackberry Hill Hospital, Bristol

Masterplanning for this existing hospital and neighbourhood through an enquiry by design charrette.

Work at Blackberry Hill focussed on a part redundant hospital, buried within the urban fabric of this part of Bristol. The hospital and its environs raised many challenges associated to future use, viability, community support, movement to and around the site, traffic, along with sustainable urban design. These issues were addressed successfully through an Enquiry by Design charrette involving the local community, landowners and stakeholders in the area. Through open dialogue in the charter a consensus emerged resulting in a master plan and development strategy for the site.

The plan includes reuse of all hospital buildings, new housing and public space all within a mixed use development that integrates with the local urban street network.
